I have both Capture 1 Pro 20 and the latest Lightroom. What can be done about the relative slowness of finding a file via Capture 1 Pro’s keywords vs Lightroom”s? Nearly instantaneous with Lightroom for a 20,000 picture file. Takes several minutes with Capture 1 Pro on the same DB, using the Catalog feature. Must be doing something wrong, right?

      Hi Peter,
I am not sure it is your fault. I currently do not have a catalog with that amount of images running with Capture One, so I can not really say something about that. I suggest you contact support and ask them. Hope this helps.

I also imported a large number of photos from Lightroom (over 30,000), and while I think there is a lot to like about Capture One, that doesn’t include catalog performance and keyword management.

The catalog is super slow when dealing with a large number of images. Tedious to wait for a whole year’s worth of photos to load, agonizing to wait for the whole catalog to load.

The keywords that I imported from Lightroom were a mess, so I decided to clean them up in Capture One. Big mistake. Totally unintuitive things happen when you move a keyword to a different parent, and it’s pretty easy to make a whole keyword hierarchy disappear by accident. I backup each time I close C1 and I have often had to restore a backup to recover keywords that simply vanished.

Here’s my theory: Capture One started off with “sessions”, which made sense for professional photographers working on separate and distinct shoots; probably a few hundred shots per session. Then, to lure people using Lightroom (or even Aperture maybe), they created “catalogs”, but the underlying inherent database design was not / is not scalable for large catalogs.
Phase One needs to rethink the database.

I use Photo Mechanic, and there is now a Plus version of PM that can create a catalog of your images, I’ve been testing the trial version. It is lightning fast compared to Capture One. It would be a huge workaround, but I’m contemplating using Photo Mechanic Plus to manage my catalog (adding keywords, star ratings, location info, searching for images) and C1 for actually working with the images. There is some XMP file manegement involved.

          Hi Rex,
You are not alone in your observations and remarks, to the contrary. As a long-time Photo Mechanic user, I will have a look into the PM 6 Plus product and how it will work in conjunction with Capture One.
By the way, Phase One is not involved in Capture One anymore. They are a separate company now.
